Amphetamines are indirect sympathomimetics acting as stimulants on the liver and the digestive tract. They show an indirect modulation of the enteric nervous system. The sympathetic innervation with direct effect on the stomach causes the side-effects described with the beta-2-agonists. This sympathetic excitation results in an increase of the tonus of the sphincter ani and leads to a sluggish action of the bowels at the rectum sphincters.
