The adverse effects seen in adults abusing human growth hormone (hGH) are the same as those of the clinical symptoms of acromegaly by oversecretion in the pituitary gland. The visible changes of bone and cartilage are amongst others the enlargement of hands and feet, nose, chin, tongue and ears. The same side effects are noticed in children, but in addition gigantism can occur due to the increase in the linear growth of bone tissue. It is difficult to completely dissociate the biological effects of hGH from those mediated through its target growth factor insulin like growth factor I (IGF-I). Therefore the adverse effects have to be seen as combined effects.
