Glucocorticosteroids (corticosteroids) are anti-inflammatory and analgesic substances released by adrenal gland during stress activity. Its basic sterol structure is similar to that of cortisol - the “stress” hormone. Synthetically produced glucocorticosteroids are mainly applied in the treatment of asthma. The misuse of glucocorticosteroids in sports comes from its relaxation effects on the respiratory tract and, in larger dose, from analgesic effects. They exhibit catabolic properties and should not be confused with anabolic-androgenic steroids. Corticosteroids may influence the central nervous system by changing the mood of an athlete and by increasing threshold of pain sensation.
