The respiratory agents have some adverse effects on the musculoskeletal function which are based on a cascade of beta-agonists binding to beta-adrenoreceptors influencing several metabolic and physiological processes in the skeletal muscle. Negative effects on the bone architecture like decreased bone mass and decreased bone mineral density occur during chronic treatment. Excessive intake of beta-2 agonists can also lead to symptoms of muscle tremor and muscle cramps. These effects are intensified by the simultaneous intake of diuretics, which is common among bodybuilders being near to a competition.
