The administration of suprapharmacological doses of anabolic steroids during prolonged periods of time impairs the in vitro functionality of thymus and spleen lymphocytes. Nandrolone and oxymethelone activate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and TNF-α, by human peripheral blood leukocytes. These cytokines are involved in autoimmune and/or inflammatory diseases.
To gain a deeper insight into the effects of anabolic steroids on the immune system, further experiments are necessary to characterize other effects on cell-mediated and humoral responses.
