In sport, alcohol (ethanol) is sometimes consumed for its potential positive effects on psychological well-being, for reduction of tension and anxiety, enhancing effect of self-confidence and for promoting aggressiveness. Alcohol is prohibited in-competition only in sports such as archery, shooting and automobile. Acting initially as a stimulant, alcohol ultimately depresses neurological function (impaired memory, visual perception, speech, motor co-ordination) in direct relation to blood alcohol concentration. Alcohol abuse leads to depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and antisocial behaviour. Alcohol is a strong addictive substance. In chronic users a sudden withdrawal of alcohol may be associated with a variety of symptoms such as anxiety, perceptual distortions and delirium tremens.
